Overview

Comprehensive IT environment assessment procedure for evaluating current technology state, identifying gaps, and establishing baselines for strategic planning. This assessment forms the foundation for IT strategy development and roadmapping engagements.

Scope

Prerequisites

  • Parent SOP requirements met (executive sponsor, stakeholder access)
  • IT documentation accessible (architecture diagrams, inventories)
  • Key technical stakeholders available for interviews
  • Network/system access for discovery (if automated tools used)
  • NDA and data handling agreements in place

Procedure

Step 1: Discovery Planning

  • Define assessment scope (infrastructure, applications, security, operations)
  • Identify data collection methods (interviews, documentation review, automated discovery)
  • Schedule stakeholder interviews (IT staff, department heads, end users)
  • Request documentation package (inventories, diagrams, contracts, policies)
  • Confirm access requirements for technical discovery

Step 2: Documentation Review

  • Analyze existing architecture documentation
  • Review hardware and software inventories
  • Examine network diagrams and connectivity
  • Assess security policies and compliance documentation
  • Evaluate vendor contracts and support agreements

Step 3: Technical Discovery

  • Conduct infrastructure inventory validation
  • Map application landscape and integrations
  • Document data flows and dependencies
  • Assess security controls and configurations
  • Identify shadow IT and undocumented systems

Step 4: Stakeholder Interviews

  • Interview IT leadership on strategy and challenges
  • Gather department-level pain points and needs
  • Understand business process dependencies
  • Document user satisfaction and productivity issues
  • Capture future requirements and growth expectations

Step 5: Gap Analysis

  • Compare current state to industry benchmarks
  • Identify capability gaps against business requirements
  • Assess technology debt and modernization needs
  • Evaluate risk exposure and compliance gaps
  • Prioritize findings by business impact

Step 6: Assessment Report Development

  • Compile findings into structured report
  • Create visualizations (architecture diagrams, heat maps)
  • Develop recommendations with prioritization
  • Prepare executive summary for leadership
  • Document evidence and sources for all findings
